For the love of ScrapSmack

Okay, so I admit it, I am a faithful reader. So when I read the following, I knew I was the gal for the job.

"Anonymous said...I for one, like to know the insiders' info on products and services that suck BEFORE I spend my money.

I agree with this. It got me to thinking though, I buy as soon as I can get my hands on something new. I wish DT members would use this forum to give us the real scoop BEFORE it hits the shelves. KWIM? I've been on several teams and I would be all over that!
___________________________________

Dude, I'd be all over that, too - I used to be on a couple major manufacturer DT's and one in particular gave us crappy rub-ons that didn't work. I told all my friends IRL (not online 'friends - I really don't trust them) not to waste their hard-earned $ on them. If, at the time, I had an anonymous forum like this to tell the real truth about products, I would have taken advantage of it.

So help me build this blog -- one company at a time. IT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE PRODUCT THAT IS ABOUT TO BE RELEASED OR JUST HIT THE MARKET. If you've invested your hard earned money into a product and it didn't perform, tell us. As you post, I will do my best to organize it in a less helter skelter fashion than a bunch of random posts.

Of course, if you have something nice to say, or you absolutely can't get along without a product, let us know. At this point, any information is a good thing. Or if you feel there is something that the industry is missing, speak up. Because if this "idea" works, I have a feeling A LOT of scrapbook manufacturers will be reading this.

P.S. I am anonymous because I prefer not to get a royal smackdown. I'm doing this because I think it will make a difference. We'll see, only the future can tell if I'm right or not.

Hey, I get to be first!

Stuff that I think has sucked:

Heidi rubons
Making Memories "velvet" letter stickers
Chatterbox rubons
Dotto permanent dots (since Hermafix sold out)

Anonymous said...

SUCKED:
Blade Runners - unless you used a roll of masking tape to tape EVERYTHING down first. But then what's the point?

I gotta agree with the HS rub-ons, I had 4 sheets that "worked" and another 6 that never did. I think they were missing the adhesive stuff. Had off and on the same problems with the Making Memories ones, and some other brand (American Traditions I think)

Die cut stickers where the "cuts" are into the design, happens often with K & Company "embossed" ones.

I've had Marvy punches that I could not get to cut paper (the old aluminum foil/waxed paper did not work.

Anonymous said...

The new BG papers. They look like photocopies of papers. Horrid.

Anonymous said...

Heidi Swapp Rubons- couldn't even stay on the sheet that the company mounted them on, let alone my scrapbook pages!

Chatterbox Rubons- Obviously they missed the memo about rubons being RUB-ons. I rubbed until I'd embossed my cardstock and the darned things still wouldn't come off the mounting paper!

I don't know who makes those sheets of vellum adhesive that is touted to be the only one you'll ever need. Keep an eye on your vellum after you use it because the invisible adhesive is actually non existent!

Heide Swapp Adhesive Chipboard...I guess she missed the memo about them being adhesive!

Pressed Petals Chip Chatter: These have got to be the most non-committal adhesive chipboard letters I've ever met! The letters are a little concave in the back so the adhesive doesn't stand a chance in Dante's Hell of sticking. That only applies for the ones that actually have active adhesive, half of my pack were dry...that was the last thing I bought from QVC!

Making Memories Tag Maker & Punches - I really wanted to love this, and MM has gone out of there way to try to fix this. But my first tag maker was broken, they sent me a new one. Works fine, but the templates are crap and don't fit the tag maker. Always have to big trimmed down. So I bought the matching punch. Can't punch anything but thin cheap paper, no Bazzill or cardstock of any quality. The thing gets jammed up. I'm sure they'll send me a new one but I'm really sorry I got it.

3L EZ Runner adhesive. I hate these. It's so hard to get it to roll and actually dispense some adhesive. Once it's on it's fine, but I can never get that far.

Anonymous said...

Maybe instead of dividing up by company, you should divide up by product category, like: tools, paper, stickers, rub-ons, adhesive, 3D embellishments, etc.

Anonymous said...

Great idea!!!!

I have had so much problems with Heidi Swapp stuff that I just quit buying it. No more tired of wasting my money

Anonymous said...

SO glad that you started this blog!

The things that immediately come to mind that sucked/sucks:

-Heidi's rub ons, adhesive chipboard letters, and "idea" book

-Purple Cow trimmer, sorry totally could not get it to cut straight

-Love, Elsie chipboard buttons, I don't think chipboard is supposed to be moldy, if it is, I guess I can use it on pages of my MIL.

-Close To My Heart white daisy ink pad, re-inker and marker, WORST white ink EVER. Use a sharpie. or paint.

-Lisa Bearnson's books and kits that she sells on QVC. I'm an idiot, but I've purchased all four, and every single one of them has had NUMEROUS pages or elements missing.

Anonymous said...

I have to disagree on the 3L adhesives - those are my favorite ever since I gave up on Tombow's (they "new and improved" it into a sucky product). An adhesive that's absolute crap? Crop N Glue. They came out with really innovative ways to dispense it, but absolutely NOTHING sticks with it! Glue rings, those cute little pouches with different types of "glue dot" ripoffs...it's all a mess. Even at CHA last year when they demo'd it for me - nothing stuck, lol! Gave them the benefit of the doubt, but they've sent me samples since and I can't get a single thing to stick worth a damn with any of their products.

Anonymous said...

I'm going to leave a "good" comment

Scrapworks/Anthology/whatever they are calling them now

They keep changing the name, but I think these 'box' albums are the best!

I really like the idea of being able to have my albums out without dust getting on the pages (can you tell i don't like to dust much?)

Thanks for the review and saving my money. I always thought about purchasing one of these and wondered if they were any good.

Heidi Swapp gets a C- for her products, and a F for her business attitude.

I just found out she copied her pink style from the She campaign. She's not even original!

Anonymous said...

Heidi Swapp's tape---so cute and it doesn't stick--I had to glue it all down, not to mention it was impossible to get off the roll!

Doesn't she have someone that checks her product, I mean, really!

Anonymous said...

KI felt stickers are horrible. Not so sticky.

Wacky Crap. I mean wacky tack. The vellum kind is ok. But the regular square kind is awful.

Anonymous said...

Yeah - I bought some of the new KI felt flower stickers too. Didn't stick at all - had to glue them down.

Anonymous said...

Yay for starting this blog!!!

Things I wish I hadn't bought:

The BG Notch and Die tool- what a sucker I was- had to have it and it is CRAP! The blades get dull within a few uses and it is HARD to use.

Of course, I agree about HS rub-ons and "adhesive" chipboard. I do like her stamps though- inexpensive and work well.

"Glue Dots" brand dots. The glue is too thin and you have to use lots of them to get them to work. Zots are MUCH better.

I also agree w/ the comment on Chatterbox rub-ons- very hard to get them to come off of the backing.

I'll give the 3L another try. Maybe I had a bad batch.

I love the idea of my tag maker. I'm just sorry it's not working out. I like the tag curler a lot, especially with the cool new epoxy tags.

Anybody else love their Fastenater? I love mine!

Anonymous said...

I forgot about the Press Petals chip chatter letters. Most of mine have been fine, but one batch was no adhesive.

Good Stuff - the Luxe rub ons, weird papers, not my style at all but I do like their rub ons. A little better for ease of use than Basic Grey, and I like theirs too!

The only letter stickers I loved were the first version from Chatterbox, I went around hoarding them. I really liked them, more than their papers and 100% more than the junk they are selling now for letters.

Anonymous said...

I haven't had a problem with the adhesive on the HS chipboard letters. I seem to have gotten the batch that tears apart in layers when you try and get it off the sheet. It's like it's stuck in there.

Heh, I guess I got everyone else's adhesive.

DOTTO PERMANENT DOTS
...used to be good, but since EK got their hands on the old "hermafix recipe", they're CRAP!
The glue makes a mess of my applicator EVERY time I use it, the tape doubles back on the roller, and I should have bought shares in the company that manufactures UNDO adhesive remover. What makes me bent about it is that I've written twice in the last 2 years to the company (NEVER had a reply) and bought THREE new frigging applicators, thinking that maybe the issue was related to deterioration with use.
I have a private business and use between 15 and 25 refills of this stuff EVERY month. Maybe my hard-earned dollar is just a drop in the bucket for EK, but if someone can suggest a comparably priced and effective alternative, I'm ready to stop giving this company my money.
EK's customer service is non-existent.

Anonymous said...

OH yes...again on the subject of EK: those stupid buckle punches.
DO NOT...I repeat:
DO NOT
DO NOT DO NOT!!!
Do not waste your money on the EK paper-shaper buckle punches.
SIX punches later (yes, all the same shape!)...I still have yet to get more than 18 punched shapes out of the %$&*#^@!! things.
Has it EVER been worth returning something in the mail to a store that had nothing to do with the product except sell it? No.
And even if I DID out of principle decide to send the broken/jammed/misaligned piece of crap back to the poor retailer that had the misfortune to order and sell this shit, EK doesn't care to reimburse the product or replace it in their inventory anyway.

Anonymous said...

Beware the new Un-Do applicater/spout/nozzle thingy.

I bought a new bottle the other day, flipped open the spout, and squeezed some onto my layout--it STREAMED out of the bottle. I mean, it poured. It was uncontrollable.

I set the bottle down and look at it--it was about 1/3 gone. After ONE usage. $8.99 I paid for that thing, and 1/3 of it was gone in 10 seconds.

I dug my old bottle out of the trash and poured the new bottle into it. It drips out too much, too, but not nearly at the rate the new bottle did.

I wish they'd come out with some sort of eye dropper style, so you could just drip a FEW drops onto what you're working on. I never use that black scraper thingy anyway.

Anonymous said...

I beg to differ on GLUE DOTS. I love them. A lot. I found ZOTS to be ineffective.

Anyone familiar w/ those Around the Block roll on sticker tape things??? BAD!

And pay a small fortune and NEVER get your Scrapbook Trends before you see them on the shelf.

Heh, I guess I got everyone else's adhesive.

ROFLMAO!! Oi! I snorted my pepsi instead of swallowing! I think that this may be the case cause I can't get anything of hers to stick...those little blingy rhinestones? They can't even stay put in the darned matchbooks they come in! So adhesive hoarder...you wanna pass some of that back to the rightful owners? Just kidding...I let loose all of my HS stuff on Ebay for $5...and I didn't care that I'd spent $40+ on it...the fact that someone was willing to take my headache for $5 made it worthwhile...and she took it even though I was pretty clear about how sucky they were! Some people will do anything to love their celebs I guess?

Anonymous said...

Some comments on clear acrylic stamps:

Really do love the HS because they are relatively cheap in comparison and I can even get staz-on off of them with just a baby wipe.

Ditto on the Autumn leaves for ease of cleaning but they are a bit pricier. Also, the letters in my batch of scribbles alphabet that haven't been used are almost permanently stuck to the plastic. I guess I could take the time to move them all around so they wouldn't.

Technique Tuesday I'm not too thrilled with. They stain really easily even with just chalk ink. They tend to get really tacky/sticky and sometimes that has caused them to screw up an image because I can't get the stamp off the paper without making a mess. I have used their cleaner and cleaning pad system but it leaves a ton of fuzz all over the stamp which can sometimes transfer when you re-use the stamp. I do like the images but wish they would work as well as the HS/AL ones.

Sassafrass Lass, exact same problems as the technique tuesday stamps.

Okay, that really made me laugh. I have some MIL family pages in the works too, mind sharing your moldy buttons?

So been wanting to say this:
Stay away from the MME's bohemian "die-cut" alphabet sheets.
I got a sheet from one of my kits and only used them once because they sucked. They were EXTREMELY difficult to punch out without mutilating them.

Anonymous said...

Xyron refills. I know they had a bad batch and that they're saying it's fixed up but I honestly haven't bought one as good as what they were before the stuff up they had last year.

Anonymous said...

Things that just suck: Heidi Swapp rubons both fuzzy and regular are the worst ever, Heidi Swapp chipboard peels off in layers and no adhesive. Provocrafts stupid little sewing machine never worked once.
Things that I just love: Cropadile is very well made and does what it says it would do and then some.

Anonymous said...

ITA: Sew Crafty thingamajig by whatever manufacturer makes miniature sewing machines: Provocraft, whatever. ALL CRAP.
I *gave* mine away and apologized profusely to the recipient as I handed it to her. The poor woman truly didn't realize how sincerely I meant it until she got it home. Last I heard, the damned thing had been passed to two more unsuspecting victims in a successive effort to rid themselves of the menace. I'm still waiting for someone to post a picture of one of these things smashed to bits with a sledgehammer laying conspicuously in the middle of the carnage.

Anonymous said...

American Crafts rub-on alphabets (the cute ones in the folders) have given me nightmares, and ruined many a layout.

I've purchased three different folders at different times (over a span of a year) and each of them has had the same problem -- not sticking, cracking, etc.. Not unlike the Heidi Swapp rub-ons.

I haven't the same uproar over these that all of the HS products get, so I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem?

I am not the OP, but I had the same problem with them. I'd send you mine, but my MIL's coming to visit this week! Great idea to use them on a layout about her. TFS! LOL

Anonymous said...

Rubons. I have a love/hate thing going on with them. Basic Grey. In general, they're good. I hate though that they sometimes peel off the backing. Kind of the opposite problem Heidi has. 7G's is the same way. They peel back and become unusable still untouched in the package.

My top 3 favorites (as far as quality)are Scenic Route, BoBunny, and (dont hate me) Hambly.

Anonymous said...

Another vote for Heidi Swapps rub-ons and "adhesive" chipboard letters as the worst product ever.

I have the blue QuickKutz and I feel like i am going to break my wrist trying to cut letters.

I love Basic Grey rub-ons, they are the best. IMHO

Anonymous said...

EXCELLENT:
KI Gloo- I use it for multi purpose household stuff. Holds better than contact cement.

Daisy D's Rub-ons - very good product. A little sticky at first, but once I got the hang of it I was impressed.

BAD:
ANY ALPHABET THAT DOESN'T HAVE ANY DUPLICATE LETTERS/VOWELS.
I'm not paying 8.00 for those.

Anonymous said...

Bad - Scraparatus tool (Karen Foster). I was so excited to get this, and while it's okay (about a B-grade) for hole punching and eyelet setting, forget about ever using those little dies to cut shapes - impossible.

A teacher at CKC told the class last year that only American made Rub-ons work well, that the ones made in China are crap, so check your packaging.

Ditto. You wanna make tags?

Buy just the rims, use them as your templates, insert photo/paper, smash down with blunt hammer, book, something.

Voila! You saved $20+ on a stupid "punch" tool.

Anonymous said...

American Crafts albums with the "mis-sized" inserts.

I bought them from a store long after (I found out later) this was a "known" problem.

Then the "known" solution was to send the correct sized page protector inserts to all the retailers and have THEM replace them.

Yes, I get that "I could call and request they send me some" but the truth is, that just PROVES to me they were banking on the fact that many people "won't bother."

Why else would they prefer to ship to one buyer at a time rather than batch-ship replacements right to the retailers?

AC - bah!

If you want 3-ring, portrait front linen buy Target photo albums for $10 and put your own page protectors in there.

This will be useless unless "posts" are divided up by manufacturer.

Otherwise it will be the same conversations about product 400x over and stacked so deep you can't reference them.

What about posts for each manufacturer or product type and then comments beneath each referencing same?

Next time your UnDo runs out, refill the bottle with lighter fluid from the grocery store. It's basically the same thing and works exactly the same way. And at something like 79 cents for a large bottle, it's WAY cheaper.

Trust me, I've been scrapping a long time and really value my layouts and photos and this really works great.

Cutterbee pricking rollers - they're supposed to punch holes ready for stitching, but they just leave a feeble dent in the paper. You still have to go over them with a pricking tool or needle.

Chizzel It tool - unpredictable on/off switch. Switches itself on and off at will.

Anonymous said...

Rockstar stack from DCWV-I just bought this and I have to say that the quality and thickness of the paper is great. The designs are fun. The foil and flocking suck. It makes some of the papers look really cheesy instead of cool.

Anonymous said...

The Fiskars punches that you hold upside down (so you can see what you are punching) and then squeeze the handle? They are awful. They don't cut anything. Out of 10-12 punches, I had 3 that actually worked.

I've had a lot of trouble with the American Crafts chipboard letters actually sticking. They keep coming unglued, so I've had to use my own adhesive to keep them on. The other Thickers have been fine, but those, not so good.

Anonymous said...

Cutterpede - Hate this. Not sure why it gets so much praise. I have to put all my weight on it to get it to cut, most times I have to run it a couple of times to get paper cut all the way through. The decorative blades are even worse, I can never get a clean cut. I miss my trusty old little Fiskars that I gave to my mom when I bought the cutterpede.

Anonymous said...

Fiskars embossing border punch - I like the border punches, but I tried the embossing one, and it doesn't do anything except make a couple little random dents in the paper. No embossing.

Why can't somebody make a scallop border punch?

Anonymous said...

MM Tag Punch Tip - it can work w/ Bazzill if you do this:
Put the palm of your hand down over the black MM logo on the opposite side of the handle. Push your palm down while squeezing with your other hand. it works. i had to cut over 150 tags for a class this way. the punch just needs more leverage on the opposite side.
the crimper works, but you can also run it through a sidekick or use a butter knife.

Anything from Heidi. My Dollar General product was nicer. Making Memories paint was flakey. Special issues from CK that have as much or more content for $6.99 as the $14.99 and $19.99. BTW I am not happy with the QVC trend and what it does for small local retailers.

Anonymous said...

oh yeah and Memory Dock...what the hell over priced and copied from IKEA storage

I could do this all day. Provo Craft silent setter and Cricut being sold at WalMart for cost when local stores said it was not going to be sold in big box retailers and a USB port that will hook up to your computer but money grubbing companies that want to blead every last penny out of us until we have no more room for all this crap.

The Heidi Swapp felt rub-ons! They are a pain in the a**!!

Sucks:
Delish Designs Paints - cute packaging but the paint stank and dried into solid blocks in the sealed jars

Magazines that have more double page ads than actual content

Chip Chatter & HS chipboard that is definitely unadhesive

Good
The MM trimmer as it cuts through Ilford photo paper

Daisy D's paper always has a nice heft and texture

*Around the Block Tape Writer Kit: Too small, so it's hard to handle.
Better off with the Dymo and ATB tape writer strips that you can buy seperately
*Around the Block Paper Tagger. Works only half the time. You squeeze the nozzle and the tag comes out, but doesn't tag what you are trying to tag :-(
*MM Tag Maker tool, hate it.--Love the rims though!I put them through my Big Shot and it works like a charm!
HS roller stamp. Piece of crap. Horrible impression and you can't even turn the handle to switch sentiments/words. Total dissapointment. -10

New products I love, Wackytack!
Especially the scrap tape and runner. With the repositionable scrap tape, you can move your paper etc as needed, but still holds firmly until you are ready to remove it. I don't use it as directed. I cut it instead of using the "widget" and use my bone folder to apply. Takes more time, but if you move your elements around a lot as I do, it's worth the extra time!!

Okay, I am NOT connected in any way to this company, but I have used some of their "bling" stuff on projects from last spring, as well as some HS stuff -- the HS stuff has fallen off already : (

The Imaginisce stuff is still sticking on. It is not to everyone's taste, not too "theme" oriented. But useful bits for most people.

Autumn Leaves rub-ons - sticks to all the wrong things

Anonymous said...

I won't repeat all that has been said about HS rub-ons and chipboard. I've also had problems with those matchbook rhinestones (don't stick) and bling frames (the stones come off of the plastic backing). I like the look of her journaling spots, but since they have adhesive on only one side, they stick up and don't lie flat on the page. AND the edges curl up.

I have a big problem with the Creative Imaginations Swatch Book Impress-Ons. The ones that I have tried to use would not rub-on. It is like they are all dried up.

All these darn white gel pens, none of them work!!!!

Ditto on the HS RubOns and Chipboard Letters, but I love so much of her other stuff.

Other wastes of money:

Xyron Cheetah - $8 for a refill that only lasted on small project, what is it like a yard of adhesive in there?

2nd the MM TagMaker - find it locks up on the tag and also dents it.

Love the Basic Grey File Set and Crop-A-Dile

hmmmm, am I the only person who's had a good experience with EK customer service? I received a punch that didn't work and they replaced it for me NO problem. Received a new one via UPS within a week. The same with Provo. Got the bad cutting mat with my expression and they immediately shipped me out 2 replacements, got them in a couple of days.

I've had the typical Heidi Swapp crappy products, I refuse to buy them anymore. I used to LOVE the 3L adhesive runners, but the last year or so they've been CRAP. the adhesive doesn't come off the roll, or if it does it just keeps coming off when I don't want it to! drives me NUTS! I can't seem to find a roll on adhesive that works anymore!

I just recently bought a cuttlebug and have to say I LOVE it! just LOVE it! It's my first non cricut die cutter and I am in heaven with it! and the embossing on it is just fantastic! I always hated dry embossing but it looked so cool I had to do it. but not anymore! :)

and one more complaint. The Cricut Expression. Why the sam hell is the 12x24 paper $18 a package? from what I understand, cardstock is typically MADE in 12x24 packs, they just cut it. but NOOOOO! I had to pay $18 for paper so I could make a big bag on my expression. and don't EVEN get me started on how fast those dang blades dull!
