My partner and I were talking last night about the state of the industry. Nothing new for us. As retailers, we always feel the need to be up on the latest happenings. As we talked about the store and the changes we were planning, we had to admit that things had changed drastically over the last few years. So much so that we honestly believed a lot of the change in customer sales was more to blame on lack of appropriate products than on the economy (or pretty much any other reason we'd be arguing about for the last few months). Appropriate product -- it sounds so strange, I know. But the truth it, my customer base is not what I'd consider abnormal. In fact, I think they're pretty darn normal. Yet I find it increasingly difficult to find product out there that will please them or meet their needs.
Over the last couple of years, the product selection, despite being from countless manufacturers, has pretty much been the same bland offering. And worse, it all looks the same. Basic Grey looks like Cosmo Cricket and Cosmo Cricket looks like Crate Paper; KI Memories looks like Dude Designs and Dude Designs looks like . . . I'll spare you the details as I really could go on ad nauseum, but it's really sickening to think that my customers basic needs -- photo meet paper -- can't be met even though I have well over two hundred different manufacturers to choose from.
Want to know the biggest sellers in my store? Karen Foster Designs, Creative Imaginations and Masterpiece Studios. Why? Because if there's a need, i.e. slumber party, baby's first haircut, or a specific sport, one of the three (if not all of them) have something to offer. Throw a bit of K & Company and EK Success and you have a wonderland for the scrap-with-themed paper and embellishments scrapbooker. And while most people on 2peas and Scrapsmack insist that they prefer patterned paper such as Chatterbox and Basic Grey and even some of the more eclectic offering such as Dreamstreet and Bampop, they really don't make much of a dent in my daily totals. In fact, in comparison, I find that I sell 5 times more Karen Foster than I do Basic Grey. And I sell 8 times more EK Success embellishments than I do embellishments from Heidi Swapp, Maya Road, Chatterbox, American Crafts, Bazzill and 7 Gypsies combined!
Then why are so many companies insisting on spending thousands of dollars to attend a show and promote product that fits the needs of only a handful of their market? And most importantly, why do they insist on cranking out 48 to over 200 skus (items) of said product when they could easily release half that amount and devote at least some of it to the tried-and-true themed market.
As a retailer, I have to say, my disappointment level has grown with each trade show and the Summer CHA was really the last straw for me. I have a hard enough time getting people to purchase these days -- with the withering economy and ever-tightening scrapbook budgets, not to mention people using their burgeoning stash -- without having to worry about not having enough quality product to choose from. My store has to maintain a certain level of inventory but I refuse to stock it with butt-ugly product, or worse, product that will grow stale on the shelves, not move and have to be clearanced at 60% to 70% off.
So tell me, what kind of scrapbooker are you and what kind of product would you like to see? Are all the sneak peeks really revving your motor? Are you even looking forward to the next trade show (Memory Trends) or are you just reverting back to your scrapbook stash because it looks a hell of a lot better than the current offering on the market??? Inquiring minds want to know.

i have got to say, i am mainly tempted now but kits that a few of the aussie shops put together now. they give you a peak at a collection of papers card ribbon rub ons ink etc that they have already been coordinated. im not saying that i use or even like all the stuff they include, but when it arrives all you need is your adhesives and photos. they kind of spark my creativity.
however, we are in a drought here in Aus so money is tight and i find where i used to have a new toy each week, i don't see new things coming. what would i like to see? more coordinated sets come through, storage and or travel gear to help me see what products i do have and some tamer papers that you could use for scrapbooking rather than as self standing works of art.
what do i not want to see? poppets, pre distressed paper, anything heidi swapp, magazines full of ads and the same old people and layouts featured.
It is true!!! 95% of scrappers could care less what the new Heidi Swapp, BasicGrey and others are putting out. They want the Karen Foster regular everyday life stuff. I do not consider myself a Professional scrapper, I have never been published, don't really care if I get published anymore. But alot of regualr everyday scrappers I have talked to have told me that the Basic Grey, Heidi Swapp, everything thing else is scary to them. Either the patterns are too big or the colors too loud, something to that effect. Now I love the Distressed papers, I have a Cropper Hopper full of BG, Daisy D's, and others that most scrappers would not use if their life depended on it. Of the new kit clubs that have popped up, none of them appeal to me. I have no use for children's themed papers or really radical designs ( new BG for instance). If I use a childhood theme I am using Daisy D's because I am scrapping older photos of myself or Hubby when we were children.
I wish the companies would turn out more older lines. I mean for heritage pages and such.
i like a bit of both.
but i must admit, with the arrival of my second baby in another month, i'll be looking for some themed paper to make life easier.
i've done lots of stuff with BG, KI, Cosmo, but I just did a Dora the Explorer themed layout that I really like. Who knew?
I do love Bazzill cardstock, good quality rub ons, letter stickers that are versatile.
I don't do themed stuff with the exception of Halloween and Christmas. I used those themed papers and embellishments for mini books. Otherwise I stay totally away from them. I do like basic grey (esp. the new perifery line), distressed paper and pretty much all of the ones that have been mentioned as ones that you all don't like. I also love Hambly. What I'm tired of are sunflowers, Disney, scouting stuff, swimming and other themes. I prefer to do those type LOs with non-theme papers and let the photos and journaling show the theme. I feel like it doesn't hit you over the head with the theme and looks better, too. I did the Disney etc, when I started scrapping but have gotten tired of that style.
I'd like to see nice, basic papers with themed embellishments. There's no reason why KF embellishments can't come in a chipboard equivalent. And I don't like paper with cheerioes all over it. I'd like to see less theme paper or more understated theme paper with improved themed embellishments. A big chipboard Dora would be fine, but let's make the prints that go with her in nice stripes, florals, so it's not an overwhelming zoo of Dora's face.

Ya know, my stash is looking better and better. I'm starting to hoard cardstock again. This fall there are releases that FIT my style and the colors that are recurring in my photography.
Sometimes the "sneak peeks" actually dampen my desire for some items. There are many folks doing displays for trade shows that really look like someone "tossed" the stuff on a page till it stopped sticking.
I have done displays for CHA a couple times now, I was told to FEATURE the new product that's been released. This last show - I couldn't always tell "what" was the product, unless the products were right there in the photo.
The crossing over and blurring of company styles - is it lazy designers or just easier where-ever produced to duplicate the same stuff, just oh so slightly different colors, or the design reversed?
Maybe it's because I'm 24, but honestly all I own is Club Scrap plain cardstock, Love Elsie lines, and Basic Grey (though I did love the bits of Chatterbox my friend sent me, used it up). I bought a lot of themed paper when I first started scrapbooking, sure that I'd use it for my theme pages, but nope. I used plain cardstock to scrap all those events and had to give away all the themes. Maybe I'm in the minority, but give me themed paper and I just feel like it's cheesy. With a theme, doesn't every one's pages end up looking the same? I like BG because I have *no* capacity for distressing, so even if it is over distressed for others it's better than the plain paper I could come up with. Love,Elsie is just breaking me out of my "plain cardstock box". I know it's bright and it doesn't really work for some of my pictures, but I scrap my pets, and they're crazy so the papers work for it. I still have a very hard time using prints though and some of my BG will have to wait around a while until I figure out how to use it.
I forgot to mention. I do use Disney themed stuff. I first started buying up Disney themed paper and realized that the plain papers, or subtle patterns mixed with the actual licensed embellishments looks much better. I'm going to challenge myself for the next trip to use *only* the themed stuff, just to use it up, but I have a feeling I'll return to the previous albums a lot sooner. Too much of a good thing, even Mickey, helps nobody. Probably the similar problem the gal had with Dora the Explorer. One accent is good, but how much can you see her without getting the point?
I don't even look at all the new sneak peeks anymore. I just think there is too much "stuff" and it's a bit overwhelming. I used to be inspired by all the new stuff - but I'm slowly realising there are certain things/styles that I like - I could care less if anyone else does ;o) I'm happy with a good supply of bazzill, some nice spotty and striped papers and a few others for a bit of variety and plenty of alphabets - chipboard/rub-ons/stickers. I love AC thickers. I know there have been a lot of complaints about HS stuff, but I don't mind her chipboard alphas even if I do need to add a bit of adhesive myself. I'm not generally into themed papers and embellishments - but I would never say never.
I would really like to see some product targeted to my lifestyle- I'm single, don't have children, don't live in the suburbs. I think scrappers like me are underserved- we probably have more time to scrap than busy mommies. I'd like some themes that celebrate my roles as an aunt, sister, daughter, graduate student, and co-worker (I work in education). I have nothing against traditional scrapbookers, but I'd like to see my identity represented too.
That is tough because my purchases sound like the smaller percentage of your clients... I purchase Heidi swapp, Basic Grey (not so much lately), Scenic Route, Creative Imaginations and Bo Bunny. I LOVE anything that looks clever and not so much themed.
I think I'm a mix of the two. I love the trendy stuff. I'm really looking forward to some of the new MM and the KI Pop Culture line. I really like some of the new BG and AC. That said, the last two layouts I've had picked up by CK used Jolee's. I know, so not cool, right? But I love them for adding a touch of theme to a page without going overboard.
My main beef with themed products? Words. WHY does everything have to have a word on it to go with the theme? I know this doesn't happen 100% of the time, but for me it's better than 50%.
Example: travel products. I'm single, no kids and I travel a lot. 90% of my layouts are travel / vacation. Usually I go to places out of the states so there isn't a lot of product available (and most of what *is* available, doesn't fit my personal style.) So honestly, how many layouts can I have with the words "Journey" or "Explore" before I'm sick of it? It's as bad as "Cherish." I don't know if I'm making sense. I would really just like to have the option to buy some themed product without having to accept from the outset that either I'll never use it all, or every other page will have the same words in different fonts / mediums.
So that's how I end up with Jolee's. I buy the KI and the BG and all of that to get away from the endless repetition that you get with themed products and then try to find a way to accessorize it with something more specific and get a more unique look with each page.
Sorry, I didn't think I would go off on a rant like that! lol. I guess I'd just like to see a happy middle ground. I don't understand why it has to be one extreme or the other.
As a teacher in a store, I have to agree. While the likes of HS and the others are to my liking and level of scrapbooking. My customers have no idea who HS is and really could care less. They don't know how to even use have the items out on the market by these companies and really just want the simplest of tools and items that make their pages, pretty quick and easy. I do a free class on different techniques and items in our store to help them sell better. Last night was the HS masks, people loved playing with them and using them, but many said they wouldn't buy them or use them because they were just too much work for their layouts. It is feedback like that that reminds me most "average" scrapbookers could care less about the types of "hip" layouts that we are seeing in the featured magazines and on DT. These companies need to realize their DT members and the magazine published are not average scrapbookers and while their designs are awesome aren't really helping sell their products to the average scrapbooker, they are tending more to scare them off period. I think most of the average scrapbookers will be photo and paper type scrapbookers.
I'm kind of an "Advanced Suzy" here. Been doing this for a very long time. Can do most any technique. No desire to be published but want to make great pages my kids and grandkids won't be embarrassed to show friends in years to come. It used to be so much easier (and fun) before I discovered magazines and message boards. I have no idea who I'm trying to impress but always want new amazing product and perfection on every page.
What I'd like to see is more paper that doesn't already look 20 years old and I HATE the scratched up look. I would like to see more great smaller prints that would look good with more than one photo on the page. I have scrapped maybe two one photo pages ever - too many photos, too little time. I also don't think one-photo pages in 40 books will be interesting to anyone 25 years from now! Maybe I'm wrong but I think it's just all too much these days.
I agree about everything looking the same. I do love me some sassafrass lass though :)

_____
I agree, I am so over the distressed paper. Now even companies like CTMH and CM are putting out that kind of paper.
what do i not want to see? poppets, pre distressed paper, anything heidi swapp, magazines full of ads and the same old people and layouts featured.
------------
I couldn't agree more!
But, I think that "theme" has gotten a bad rap over the last few years or maybe since the beginning.
I would like to see paper that didn't look so edgy but that fit in with some sort of theme that also wasn't cheesy. For example, if it's holiday paper why can't it just be tastefully colored red, green and goldish without having penguins on it? That way I can scrap holiday themed photos with holiday themed poinsettias or other embellishments without being overwhelmed with cutesy penguins. Yes, I know those colors won't work for everyone but you get where I'm going with this.
Pet papers are themed - but do they have to be garish? Somewhere there has to be a compromise and I feel the current manufacturers are just too lazy to try anything new at all. Or maybe they're too afraid to try something new, I don't know what the problem is.
What I do know is that the magazines are hurting rather than helping the problem all around, from their over-promotion of designers/celebrities to their flooding the market with too much hype of certain products to the detriment of other, equally good products. If they all folded tomorrow I wouldn't miss a one!
I'm not a themed sb'er. I hate all of the baby, wedding, summer, fall, winter blah blah blah specific paper. Give me something I can use with multiple pictures, different settings, etc. Then again, I'm not having a baby, I'm not doing a wedding book, I don't do Halloween or special books for the holidays, etc. I do everyday life books and vacation books.
I love Basic Grey. Really, really love it. I also like quite a bit of the Karen Foster stuff. I love Scenic Route and Rusty Pickle.
I hate cheesy embellishments and stickers (e.g. Carolee's creations). I'm iffy about Elsie's stuff - some of it is ok, most of it I can't imagine using. It's a little too messy for me.
I like about 50% of the Heidi Swapp stuff - please, could we not have pink throw up everywhere just ONCE?
The stuff I'm big on is stamps, cardstock and chipboard. You can never have too much of those things. And bling - lordy bring on the bling!! Back to basics for me..
For me I buy what appeals to me... but its usually off the sale table... if you don't feel like you need to keep up with the latest craze its easy to buy quality paper that works on a variety of pages regardless of whose name is on the back of it.
It is all starting to look the same and I have definitely started to use my stash.
I would have to say I agree with your assessment that most scrapbookers are of the themed variety. When I go to crops, that's what I see. But there are also tons of scrappers that don't have children and don't want cutesy.
I like a lot of different lines, and I guess I do like a little cutesy. For themed stuff, I like Karen Foster and Doodlebug. Doodlebug stays with the same color palette, so it's really easy to match older papers with new ones.
I guess I've come to a point where I'm over the whole celebrity thing and I'm sick of seeing the same stuff over and over in the magazines. I just want to get pictures and memories down on paper and be creative in the process. I am focusing more on the basics and using very basic supplies -- cardstock, stamps, rub-ons, brads, small amounts of patterned paper. I do like Heidi Swapp journaling spots and the 7 gypsies self-inking journaling stamps. For Halloween, Christmas, and sports, I like the more subdued themed papers so that they aren't overwhelming. I like basic Colorbok albums in 12x12, 8x8.
I just think that there's too much out there and it's overwhelming, especially if you are new to scrapbooking. I am sick of all the new trends and get the general idea that it's not acceptable to use products if they aren't on trend. Well, I don't have the money or the space to buy any more stuff unless I plan to use it for something specific. And so I'm going to my stash not only to save money but to avoid being overwhelmed by all the new stuff. I just don't need it.
I own a lss and I all I have to say is AMEN. You said EXACTLY what I've been saying for months. Thank you. Now what are we to do???
I guess I'm in the minority that you speak of....I guess I'm one of the people that these manufacturers are creating products for....I think all the new stuff ROCKS! I love Basic Grey & anything that is distressed & grungy looking! I love 7Gypsies, Making Memories, Heidi Swapp, etc. I HATE Jolee's & any of the themed stuff...not my style at all. I enjoy creating pages about holidays & events that don't look like I just matched a whole lot of "halloween" stuff together or "christmas" stuff together, etc. That's just boring & predictable to me. Takes the fun out of creating something, becuz they've already done the work for me. Just my opinion.
I totally am into buying non-themed paper, like BG, CC, etc and then creating the layout letting the photos convey the theme. However, having worked and taught at a lss, I know that the majority of scrappers want the theme specific papers to "get the pages done!". I can remember a customer pretty much losing it because there wasn't a paper that was a corn background for her "baby's first time eating corn on the cob" page, lol. We showed her some paper with a hay background, a red gingham one, with ideas on how to do the page. She couldn't grasp the idea.
Another time, my coworker had a customer that needed something really specific. She was a publicist and needed lesbian themed stickers for a gay event. I'm not kidding! My co-worker didn't miss a beat and led her over to the MAMBI rack and suggested the girly girl lines, you know the ones with the teens, bff and all that. Thankfully this customer could make the stretch with her imagination. But she wasn't really a scrapper either.
I don't really buy themed scrap stuff, unless it is occassionally some birthday or Christmas embellishments which I then use to make cards.
But, I'm mad keen on new products, I can't get enough, I need my credit card forcfully removed from me. I see something cool someone has done and then want to have a go!
As a previous online store owner in Australia, I know how hard it is to gauge what people want to buy. Sometimes you think the latest Heidi or BG is going to sell like hotcakes, and sometimes it is the surprising little things that don't sell. There is no rhyme or reason.
Themed stuff I like - pets, babies, Disney
I would really like to see some product targeted to my lifestyle- I'm single, don't have children, don't live in the suburbs. I think scrappers like me are underserved- we probably have more time to scrap than busy mommies. Ditto on the travel post above, too.
I love BG, Luxe, Cosmo Cricket, Crate Paper and too many more to mention.
This blog is interesting, why isn't it being updated by the blogger?
I agree with you & many of the above posters. I love the BG paper, but I don't use a lot of it. I mostly use Bazzill (not because it's trendy, but because I love the colors), my pictures, and some alphabet rub-ons or stickers. I sometimes add a splash of pp, usually BG or Cosmo Cricket. I buy it because I like the colors. I don't buy theme paper because I rarely do theme-type pages. I don't have kids, so most of my pages are either of my niece & nephew or of trips DH and I take.
I think I would use more theme papers if they were toned down. Like, I do a LOT of baseball pages, since I'm a huge fan and we go to lots of games. I never use baseball themed paper, because it's really loud - bright pictures of baseballs or fields. But I love Jolee's-type stickers for those same pages...you can make a nice page with cardstock, pictures, and a few nice stickers/embellishments.
I also think that the majority of scrapbookers are scrapbooking for their families, not to be published. If I ever want my family to see completed pages, they can't all be works of art.
ok, seriously you need to keep this blog going. How cool is this
Because they are into "image" (hip cool stylish graphic scrapper) versus reality "scrapper who wants theme/stickers and papers to match the subject of her photos"?
They've forgotten their core group and worse, seem to disdain them.
I myself like basic grey because I love to alter items like barn stars and such. I don't get into cutesy over-doing it scrapbooking. I let the pictures be the #1 part of a picture book. But I wanted to say something on the karen foster scrapparatus(sp). What a waste of money. Totally useless. Save your money. More like a kid's item. Love this blog!!!! great idea!!!!
Your blog keeps getting better and better! Your older articles are not as good as newer ones you have a lot more creativity and originality now keep it up!

So I took the plunge -- bought myself a Fatman iTube Dock and I've gotta tell ya I am pleasantly surprised. I actually listened to one at a friend's house a few months back and just couldn't get that music out of my head because it impressed the heck out of me. I searched online everywhere I could think of for a great deal and finally found it at Ordio in Westfield Bondi Junction. I phoned them first and asked a bunch of questions and everything was answered to my satisfaction so I went ahead and made the purchase. Dispatch was surprisingly fast. Everything was as it should be. I'm pretty darn happy and I'm playing it right now. Not sure if they dispatch outside of Oz but you won't be sorry if they do.
Very nice...
